A friend just moved into a condo downtown two months ago, so I spent the weekend at her place to see the fireworks from her building.

Our overly ambitious plans:

  • Go to Chinatown for dinner
  • Head to the bars for drinks afterwards
  • Play pool at her condo
  • Learn belly dancing
  • Watch a movie
  • Get mani/pedi-cures
  • Go shopping
  • See the fireworks

In reality we…

  • Went to Chinatown for dinner Chinatown dinner
  • Went back to her place, turned on the tv and channel flipped. Got to see some practice fireworks for a while.
  • She fell asleep while I went to shower
  • I fell asleep while she got ready for bed. It was around midnight.
  • Made waffles for breakfast
  • Went to the outlets and shopped for 8 hours!! EIGHT HOURS! I was shopped out. Thank goodness the malls closed early for the holiday. While I called it a day, and sat around waiting, she was still at it. Some poor guy who was sitting by me looked so worn. I asked if his wife was in Ann Taylor because that’s where we were sitting near. He nodded. I told him that was a good ‘un, he’s gonna have to wait a while. Ha! I had first hand experience. Then, I went to track my friend down at Banana, and wound up getting 3 more shirts while she was still at some shoe store. Somebody stop me.
  • Came back to do a bit of furniture rearranging because she bought a rug and 2 pillows. She’s way domestic and a leeetle bit obsessed with home decorating. Think HGTV.
  • We watched the fireworks off her balcony starting at 8:30. View off the balcony
  • Drank some bubbly, had leftover Chinese food, and wooooh-ed with the neighborhood people while watching an amazing display. It was actually multiple shows. Just when we were watching one go off, another side would launch another. It was everywhere.
  • Watched the belly dancing dvd.
  • Fell asleep by midnight. The fireworks were still going.

Best Fourth of July ever!

Seems I blog about every haircut I get don’t I? Minor obsession. Anyway. My hair was getting a bit raggedy and frayed, seeing as how the last time I got a cut was October of last year. Originally planned to wait another month because I didn’t think it was at the length I wanted it to be yet. Then I changed my mind because seriously, when no amount of product can make your hair look healthy, it’s time for a cut. I went to a different lady this time. She did a decent job length-wise. And I liked that she used scissors rather than a blade.
Haircut!
Pardon the frizzy look. I’m starting to think I have straw for hair no matter how often it’s trimmed.

Unrelated: I had no idea what a chocolate babka was, but I just had a mouthful of it and it’s so yummy, I want to eat the rest of the loaf sitting in our kitchen area. It’s like a chocolate cinnamon roll with more chocolate than roll. Oh delectable goodness. A nap right now would be icing.

Last weekend, I discovered my pair of sneakers went missing. They were pretty new, maybe worn once or twice indoors. I kept them in the basement in the shoe box they came in. Anyway, when I went to get them, I realized the shoe box was empty. Yet one more thing the burglars nabbed. So I went shoe shopping for a replacement and wouldn’t you know it, I now have three new pairs of sneakers. How many pairs of sneakers does a girl need right? *sigh*

Went to SE DC for a little baseball watching this past weekend. I have a bit more of a clue about baseball than football which isn’t saying very much, but there ya have it. Watched until the top of the 7th inning (see, I learned jargon!) and then left early with my friend because we’re fairweather fans. 1. The metro, the crowds. 2. It started raining. 3. Baseball doesn’t fascinate me all that much. The highlight of the game was when some guy stole a base. And a pitcher got a guy who was trying to steal. That was pretty exciting. Oh wait no, this was the highlight:
Kielbasa

And watching the fans try to get a wave going (it sorta’ did).

And people watching. Some dude couldn’t keep off his stupid Blackberry.

And heckling the other team. I stopped though because it seemed to be backfiring.

And commenting about various other people and goings on.

I didn’t wear green today. Completely forgot. Y’know how it goes, when you remember special days one or two days before, but then the day of, you forget. There’s gotta be a name for this phenomenon. I do it all the time, particularly for birthdays.

I spent all Sunday watching TV, napping, knitting, and doing some chores around the house. I didn’t even turn on the computer!! Or drink coffee. Yay for naps! :)

FYI - I haven’t had microwaved head of cabbage yet! Ha!

My cousin showed me this Asshole Mario game on YouTube. It’s unbelievably assholey. I bow down to the person who has the patience and skills to pass these levels.

Warning: Not for people with weak constitutions. There’s a lot of dyin’ going on. Poor Mario.

Even if there’s a certain ickiness factor in sticking my feet in other-peoples-sweated-in skates, you forget all that once you lace up and throw yourself on the ice.

It was an outdoor rink. The temps were certainly cold enough. 20-30s. But you warm up pretty quickly.

I’m still up. It’s 3:38 AM Monday morning. I get today off so I am up watching the Food Network’s Food TV online. I really ought to sleep but I kept drinking coffee all day long so even though I’m tired, I can’t rest. Anyway, I found a new (to me) chef I like, Dave Lieberman.

There’s a lot of good information on Dave’s show, Dave Does. I watched all of his online episodes in rapid succession because I’m so keen on learning and not because he’s a cutie. No sirree. Did I mention he eats with gusto? Ah, who’m I kidding, my heart is going pitter pat as I type, but I guess it could be the caffeine.

Interesting factoids I picked up tonight:

  • Every state makes wine. NY is the third highest wine producing state in the country. I’m going to take a wild guess and say CA is #1 and Oregon #2 (not sure).
  • You can rig your popcorn air popper into a coffee bean roaster. Hmm… there’s an idea for my as-of-now useless kitchen gadget.
  • Tomatoes are called the apple of love in French.
  • Avocados look like testicles when they’re growing on the tree because they hang in twos.
  • Sake is made with moldy rice. The fungus is called Koji.
  • Good sake is imbibed at room temp, or chilled. Bad sake is warmed. Warming a sake doesn’t make it bad.
  • Induction ranges use magnetic waves to heat iron or steel cookware faster.
  • Healthy school lunches help kids do better in school.

Everybody say with me now, “Fascinating!”

it’ll suck the life outta you. I joined Facebook. I spent almost the entire day stalking people - looking at everyone’s profiles, photos, and feeds, and playing with all the different applications. There are some neat ones out there like a map dotting all the places you’ve ever visited, and some useless fun ones like Growing gifts. I think it’s a pot that eventually grows into a surprise something. Every thing I do is documented on Facebook down to the minute. I’m so last century because that still weirds me a bit. Like that song by The Police, every body is someone’s not-so-secret stalker. It makes me somewhat self conscious. Thankfully, it’s a little more private in that people can’t see your profile unless you permit it.  Riiiight?

To begin my self-improvement project of fraternizing with the white folks, I went to a happy hour last night with a fun bunch of people. Turns out the white folks were outnumbered so I left. Ok I’m just kidding. I had a great time. It’s been a while since I’ve gone anywhere for fun. In hibernation mode, if I’m not at work or running errands and seeing dumbbutt dentists, I’m home, knitting, eating and blogging.

This was my first time at Gordon Biersch. I liked their beer and service. Restrooms are clean, lots of TV screens, nice outdoor patio area. Service-wise, they split our bill for ~20 people. Geez, most places I go to won’t do it for even 5 people. Food is good too, but beware the garlic fries. Unless you’re trying to ward off vampires, them garlic fries are potent. Of their house beers, I only tried the Hefeweizen and I thought it was a good flavorful but not overpowering beer. So you have a frame of reference, some common beers I like are Sam Adams, New Castle, Yuengling, and Corona. Basically, pale ales and lagers are good, stouts only on the rare occasion. Bottom line, I look forward to future happy hours at this joint.
