We gotta get outta this place

This weather is totally draggin’ me down.  It’s been so dreary and cold some days (yesterday for example) that even shopping doesn’t inspire me to go outside.  SHOPPING!!  I love SHOPPING!  Yesterday it was wet and rainy and cloudy all day.  I mean even mid afternoon was cloudy and hazy.  I managed to eke out a grocery trip, which was good once I got into the store.  I mean once indoors, the shopping thing just naturally kicks into gear but it’s the draggin my butt out there that sucks.

First Snow of the Season

This week has been freeze my butt off cold! I have been such a wimp about walking that I asked my parents to pick me up from work 3 days in a row. Yes, I’d rather sit at the office an extra hour or so than have to be out in this popsicle weather. All this cold and everyone was wondering when the snow was going to come down and lo and behold, it’s finally snowing today. I am ready to take a vacation down south!

I opened my big mouth and it stopped. Ah well, it was pretty for a moment.

Building a Living Classroom

Today was one of those not-to-hot, not-to-cold sunny days. We went to a suburban elementary school to do some volunteer work this morning. It’s for a a little conservation project called “For Lands and Waters.” They’re creating various areas of gardens for wildlife, to prevent erosion, to filter runoff, and also as a teaching tool for the schoolkids. I hate bugs. HAAATE them so it was fine when I was digging but then when we had to separate the grass from the dirt and actually touch the dirt, I wandered off with a classmate to “take a break.” It was nice catching up with her though. We both agreed we missed school. It was fun going to a classmate’s home to work on group projects and head over to happy hour after a final exam. It’s been a year and we’ve started to fall out of touch as people return to their lives, get married, get new jobs, have babies, move out of state, move out of the country. It’s great that we’re all so active but it’s also nice to be able to reconnect sometimes.

For Lands and Waters - A Living Classroom

We had lunch at Temel after. A local turkish restaurant with three big fish tanks. One with cichlids (oscars, convicts), another with discus and corycats, and another with angelfish. Oh yeah, they have food too. And it was very good, but we loved looking at the tanks. They were very well-kept.

Reliving the weekend

It’s only Monday and I’m ready for the weekend. This morning, I had to have coffee because I just could not wake up. It was pitch dark and rainy.

So this weekend we explored Clarendon Day. I brought out my fancy camera and when I went to take pictures, I realized I forgot to put the memory card back in from the last time I uploaded photos. So I’ll just say there were lots of vendors, food vendors, jewelry vendors, myriad assortment of schtuff vendors, and live bands. Obviously we got nothing but food. People food and some cat and dog food samples for our neighbor’s pets to sample. I stupidly wore my 3 inch heels. THREE inches!! They’re shoes I bought years ago and never wore and of course, since I’ll be walking for hours in the city, why not three inch heels. My brain functions most of the time. Except for when I’m at DSW staring at a pair of three inch heels. And when I’m heading out for a day of walking. I’m in blister hell.

Sunday, we went to a bakery that was having an open house. They let people come in to tour their factory and gave out cookies, pretzels, rolls, muffins, and doughnuts as they demonstrated how they made them. I love watching pretzal twirling. Then, we went to Costco. By this time I was pretty hungry. After all those treats, I wanted meat! I got some steaks. Here I am trying to cut back on meat because it bad for me, bad for the environment, bad for everyone in general, and certainly bad for the animals, but I’m weak. Incidentally, we had a t-bone with melted blue cheese on top for dinner. Paired with a glass of wine. Ah, decadence.

And I played an ungodly amount of Sims 2. It’s like the Days of Our Lives of video games.

Too Hot

Everyone’s been talking about the unusually hot and long heat wave we’ve been suffering but I guess up until yesterday I didn’t go outdoors much aside from the short walk from Metro to the office. But yesterday evening, we had dinner with a friend and just walking around the area even at 7:30 in the evening, it was still cookie-baking hot. By 11PM it got a little more bearable but wow I hope we get some relief rain soon.

The First Day of Spring

Today is the vernal equinox! This weekend is much much warmer (close to 80 degrees!!) and today is particularly sunny. I think working in cubicles gives me a false sense that the days are dim and dreary. Now I know it’s just our working conditions that are dim and dreary. Today, with windows to enjoy the full on sunshine, I figured out why the orchid’s leaves look like they’ve been fried crispy.

It’s always the fine print that gets ya.

The windowsill is full on baking sunlight in the mornings. I moved it away and applied soothing aloe and sunblock on those poor crispy leaves.

Chinchilla shed Look, here’s another sign of spring. The chinchillas are hot and molting.

Rainy Saturday

I haven’t stepped outside today yet but I’ve noticed that it’s kinda’ dark indoors even with the shades open. What a glum day. Though it does feel Spring-like to be getting these rains. Actually it makes me want to start my garden soon! All this free watering happening and I’m missing out. So with the rain, today’s get-to-do activities consisted of cleaning the shower, toilet, floors, and tables. I broke another item. A statue. Dearie me, at this point, I don’t know what to say anymore. I had no idea I was so good at breaking things. It’s like a newly found talent. Who knows how long those six bowls will last. I’m putzing around doing laundry, cleaning the kitchen and eating snacks to further slow down my tax filing. I’m torturing myself with it. It’s not hard but so tedious. And I just don’t feel like typing in numbers anymore after doing that all week.

Let me go see what the animals are up to.

Update:
I was hoping to submit my taxes this afternoon but after doing it twice and getting two different results, I need to do it a third time! Dangit!

Update 2:
Ahmigawd!! No charm doing it a third time. Now I have three different results!! GAAAAh!!!
That’s it. I can’t do this anymore. I will have to finish it another time.

Update 3:
I got a repeat result! 2nd and 4th try were a match. Whew! Though based on this bad track record, I think I might do it again. Just to mess with myself. Later, with a fresh brain.

I love the flowers, I love the daffodils

This weekend, I saw mounds of dirty snow in a park, right next to some people playing tennis in shorts and t-shirts. It was sunny and probably in the mid-50s. I walked about outside with only a light jacket. It felt cool but what a nice feeling to be out in the sun. Then, I spotted some bulbs poking through the earth. Could it be? Spring is coming!? Or is March coming in like a lamb and going out like a lion?

I’m giving up work for Lent.

I changed my mind about liking this settling back into the usual rut! This week has been long. Every day feels like two and today, I’m wondering why I’m still sitting here. Where’s the SNOW!? And ensuing CHAOS! PANIC! Milk, eggs, bread, toilet paper people!! Get more toilet paper! I’m predicting rain.

Lent started last week some time, and it wasn’t until 2 or 3 days after that I realized I didn’t select anything to give up. So I had to rack my brain for something that wouldn’t be such a bad thing to start doing or stop doing. Something that can better my already wonderful self.

“Self,” I said, “how could you possibly be even better? (And it needs to be something you’ve already done or not done these past few days.)” And all I could come up with was coffee. I gave up coffee (again, I know) until April 4th.

Unplanned Vacation

Rayman's Raving RabbidsI haven’t been to work since last Friday when we were let out early due to the impending snow storm. We now have yet another storm which is coming down pretty steadily. So after day four of being cooped up in the house, the Wii finally made it’s debut. Yesterday was a full day of Rayman’s Raving Rabbids ending with Raving Rabbids 2 into the wee hours of 1 AM!. Today, it’s on to Dr. Mario. My arms are sore from Raving Rabbids.
