No sign of winter left

Even though the experts are predicting the peak bloom dates this year to be March 20-23, I noticed the cherry trees have blossomed. Maybe it’ll take a few more days for them to fully explode. Regardless, I took it as a sign to put away all my winter clothes and swap the heavy comforter for a lighter one. Everything is packed away and we have nothing but summer items out now. We’re prepared for the 6 months of summer weather that’s already begun.

I’ve been looking up flights to California to escape this hot weather. It’s like we missed the transitional weeks of 50 to 60 degree weather and jumped right to the 80s. Usually, I want to visit CA for the warm weather and early springtime blooms but this year, all of that landed here. All around, the forsythia, redbud, and foul bradford pears are in full bloom. And the flights are crazy expensive. When I looked them up in the winter, they were around $250 or under. Now they’re close to $500!!

Oh, Happy St. Patty’s!

Hot day in winter

What in the world!? It was close to 80 degrees today! In the midst of winter!! Everyone was complaining about lack of A/C and the metro cars were kinda’ hot and stuffy. I had the luck of sitting next to a rather pungent armpit on the way home. It’s as if we skipped winter this year, had spring instead, and now we’re headed into summer.

Groundhog

What do groundhogs know? It feels like spring is right here. I mean, who needs Hawaii? With midday temperatures hitting the 60s, I’ve been able to take walks outside during lunch in a t-shirt and lap up the sun. I’m cured of my winter blahs! Actually, we’ve been having a rather mild winter this year.

Oh and today marks the 5th year of this blog. Who knew I’d still be talking to myself 5 years later?

Blue

I have a bad case of the winter blues! I think fall and even up to Winter solstice I’m just working my way down to the blues. Mostly I can deal with it by self-medicating with lots of cheesy poofs, cereal, beer, and coffee. Then sometime around early February, I’m a blob of give-up-ness. Uncle! Give me some sunshine! It’s made worse because the only time I see sun is if I’m running late in the morning so instead of enjoying the sun I’m scurrying to my sunless Dilbert-cave. Those advertisements I’m seeing online for Hawaii is looking mighty tempting!

Such a tease

This weekend, we got almost 70 degree weather! The sun was out, people were in t-shirts and shorts. I almost thought this was a sign of a mild winter. So I headed out to work this morning in my lighter winter jacket and decided to leave my hat and gloves home. And when I leave to go home, it’s snowing.

SNOW!!

It snowed yesterday!!  Not like your little bitty snow, but big flakes with accumulation in some parts.  Of course it all melted by the time it stopped, but still, the weather turned frosty for that moment.  First snow of the season.

Quack quack
We had dinner with the family last night and played more 7 Wonders.  The nerds conspired and plotted while I kept noshing on cupcakes, fruit, and pita chips.  The food just kept coming.  Ah gluttony.  Delicious.

It’s too early for this

I know it couldn’t have been but a few days ago that we were still enjoying 80 degree afternoons, so what is with the 40 degree mornings and evenings now?  It seems too soon for it, but I’ve busted out my warm fuzzy sweatpants.  And we’re just 10 days into fall.

The heat!

This heat wave is unbearable.  I don’t even know if this is a heat wave or if this is the new normal, what with the global warming and all.  Even this morning heading out to work, the hot humid air just hit me as I stepped outside.  It was so heavy.  This afternoon, I decided to let a few crowded trains go before catching mine because I’d rather wait to go home than sit in a suffocating rail car.  I think it’s going to last til the end of the weekend.  I think I heard that it’ll climb to a 116 degree heat index (temperature + humidity).  Who needs to travel to a tropical island.  This place has the makings for a rainforest.

A/C

Today’s temperatures hit the upper 80s. At times sunny, at times rainy and now, I’m seeing thunder and lightning. The heat mixed with the humidity spells air conditioning! Tonight was the first time this year we had to use A/C. We kept our windows open yesterday and today during the day because I made curry and you know how that lingers. I’m not sure it helped though but it was tasty, so worth it.

I got my nails did!

The weather is beautiful today. On my way to the nail salon, I noted the forsythia have started blooming.

Ivy Nails
Second manicure ever! I went to this place nearby called Ivy. It’s run by Koreans, surprisingly. I guess I thought of nail salons as more of a Vietnamese thing. I know, total stereotype. They were very efficient and they even massage your hands. Ahh… best 2 minutes today!

I have a thought. $18 (includes tip) isn’t a lot of money. But for what’s essentially filing and painting your fingernails, something I usually do while watching TV, it seems kind of pricey. And knowing the way I use my hands, dishes, cooking and such, these nails will not last me a week. On the other hand (haa!), I felt so pampered and I got to meet some nice lady who was also getting her nails done too. How do you put a price on that? She was so surprised this was my second manicure ever and that I’d never had a pedicure before. I guess it’d be fun to try. Maybe some other time. It’s definitely not something I will get into on a regular basis though. Too impractical for me.
