It’s still alive! And after the first flowers faded, I managed to coax another stem of flowers to appear. I noticed one leaf starting to yellow recently which is BAD NEWS! I think I watered it twice last week instead of just the once. These things matter to orchids! Too much dirty fish water from Chara. I’m going back to the method of picking it up to see if it needs watering. Light means water it, heavy means the medium is still damp enough.

Orchid 2.0 bloomed!
Reminder to self!
Next year, I MUST plan time off between President’s Day and Memorial Day. March or April is perfect! I NEED a Spring Break. And I mean, okay, what am I waiting for? I could do it right now. But I can’t because it feels too rushed. There isn’t the time to anticipate for the trip. Really it would shortchange the amount of good feelings I get from looking forward to a trip if I rush through it. And everyone knows one of the best parts of planning a vacation is the time you get to spend looking forward to it. At this rate, I ought to be planning for a Fall trip so I have all Summer to look forward to it. Besides, I’m not one of those people who can drop everything on a whim and take off. I need to think and plan and adjust my routine-loving self out of its routine. Geez I sound like such a stick in the mud. Well so it goes, I am now reminding myself next Fall to plan for a nice March or April trip or time off to do something, or nothing. It is imperative for my mental health and general happiness! I’m thinking Prime Rib in SF. Or Ad Hoc again in Yountville. Of course it’s about the food. What’d you think I was talking about?! I travel for no other reason than to eat a good meal.
The cat’s outta the bag!

We adopted a cat! He’s a 9-year old Himalayan who’s very affectionate. He’s doing pretty well adjusting to us and we’re adjusting to him. Ever since we babysat for our neighbor’s Himalayan, we’ve thought if we were to ever get a cat, we’d get a Himalayan. He’s a happy new addition to our growing family.
No sign of winter left
Even though the experts are predicting the peak bloom dates this year to be March 20-23, I noticed the cherry trees have blossomed. Maybe it’ll take a few more days for them to fully explode. Regardless, I took it as a sign to put away all my winter clothes and swap the heavy comforter for a lighter one. Everything is packed away and we have nothing but summer items out now. We’re prepared for the 6 months of summer weather that’s already begun.
I’ve been looking up flights to California to escape this hot weather. It’s like we missed the transitional weeks of 50 to 60 degree weather and jumped right to the 80s. Usually, I want to visit CA for the warm weather and early springtime blooms but this year, all of that landed here. All around, the forsythia, redbud, and foul bradford pears are in full bloom. And the flights are crazy expensive. When I looked them up in the winter, they were around $250 or under. Now they’re close to $500!!
Oh, Happy St. Patty’s!
Hot day in winter
What in the world!? It was close to 80 degrees today! In the midst of winter!! Everyone was complaining about lack of A/C and the metro cars were kinda’ hot and stuffy. I had the luck of sitting next to a rather pungent armpit on the way home. It’s as if we skipped winter this year, had spring instead, and now we’re headed into summer.
In honor of Leap Day!
Well, okay, I’m not really doing anything special to recognize Leap Day. Really, the only difference is, it’s extended my month to do the dishes by 1 day. Basically, a negligible impact to how Leap Day has affected me.
This week, I’ve been in training, which is boring-ish, but still better than being at the office! I love walking about during lunch or just chatting with peers about how crazy our coworkers are. We compare psychological battle scars and it makes us feel better that we’re not the only ones having to contend with the nut-jobs and such. To be fair though, work issues are everywhere, our situations are no different. I’m not sure how many more jobs I have to flip through before I give up.
Giving it up
Groundhog
What do groundhogs know? It feels like spring is right here. I mean, who needs Hawaii? With midday temperatures hitting the 60s, I’ve been able to take walks outside during lunch in a t-shirt and lap up the sun. I’m cured of my winter blahs! Actually, we’ve been having a rather mild winter this year.
Oh and today marks the 5th year of this blog. Who knew I’d still be talking to myself 5 years later?
Resolutions
I think I’ll leave the behavior-altering goals for Lent. 40 days without coffee sounds more realistic than 366 days. On the other hand, I wouldn’t mind learning how to swim this year. I tried signing up for adult beginners classes last year but apparently there are a lot of adults around here who can’t swim. The classes were all filled up! So I’ll have to try again this year. I don’t need any fancy moves, just enough to get me out of the pool should I ever fall in on the deep end or want to go to Hawaii. Or something.
Jet lag relapse
Over the Christmas break, we spent the time with some cousins for extended game nights. Really really extended. We’d have dinner, then play 7 Wonders, Settlers of Catan, and now, Ticket to Ride – Europe. We stayed up til 6AM the next day on both Saturday and Sunday night. Coffee in one hand, wine in the other all night long. On Monday, I slept the whole day, waking only to eat. We’re planning on doing it all over again this New Year’s weekend. Hopefully we’ll have more sense to stop at a reasonable hour (HAA!). I’ve been feeling groggy all week trying to recuperate from what can only be described as jet lag relapse.
