Furry Friend Fix

Yesterday we went to a local pet store to volunteer at a Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation adoption event. Volunteers are paired with a dog and we walk around outside the store waiting for some folks to come check them out and maybe take them home. I’ve never had a dog so I was a bit nervous about how these animals would behave. I was concerned with big dogs or aggressive dogs but I think every dog was incredibly well socialized and friendly towards everyone (though not necessarily other dogs). The dog I got was Tibby, a 15 pound spaniel mix. She had the sweetest disposition, completely calm, secure, and very affectionate. She never barked the entire few hours I spent with her, even when other dogs started barking. She wasn’t scared of loud cars, young kids that came up to her, big dogs, small dogs. She was just mostly the quiet observer. I think one person even joked that she was given sedatives, she was such a cool cucumber. When I went to take a photo of her, I learned of her weakness.
Tibby
Belly rubs!! When I stooped down she rolled over and that was it. She started doing it every so often. And I noticed she wasn’t sensitive to me touching her paws or anything. She didn’t seem abused. At first I was worried her calmness gave other people, especially kids, the impression that she was aloof, but when one family came by, with 3 kids, I showed them her weakness and they fell in love with her. After walking around to visit all the other dogs, they came back and said they wanted to take her home. Yay for Tibby! The father seemed reluctant because he said he was allergic but I think the rest of the family had already fallen in love. Especially the 2 girls. They carried her around like a baby and she seemed to enjoy that. I think I heard the wife telling him that there’s a 2 week trial but gosh, when they walked out of the pet store with a new pink leash, name tag, and doggy bed, I got the feeling this was a keeper. At the end of the event, on our way home, I kinda’ wished I had taken her home. She would’ve been the perfect lap dog to watch House Hunters with. I think we kinda’ bonded for the short amount of time we spent together. But I know she’ll have a better doggy life with that family than us. We’re out so many hours and with the 3 kids to shower her with affection, she’s going to be living in the lap of luxury. And given that she’s a calm & quiet dog, I think even their dad will grow to like her because he was pretty much the same way too.

The other dog we met was Houdini, a hound mix. He was about 40 pounds and also very calm and quiet. Never barked the entire time. I think due to his size, people worried that he would be harder to keep. His bio read that he needed a fenced in yard at least a 6 feet tall. Gosh, he would’ve been a nice dog to have too.

Volunteering for this was so much fun. I basically got to pet doggies and kitties all day. If I’m ever in the market for a dog, I’ll want a grown dog and I’d definitely look at these adoption events. The animals this organization handles were all rescued from about-to-be-euthanized situations. They keep them at a ranch in the sticks of Virginia and are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Ode to Fluffy, Fluffa, Princess Poopybutt, Bad Bunny, Good Bunny, Cute Widdle Bunny Bun…

We just got back this morning and I’ve greeted Marco and Gina. They just got some food and now they’re running around the place causing mayhem. I’ve missed them but now that we’re back, now I miss the buns. Fluffy especially.
Fluffa loves greens
Fluffa is a Flemish Giant and the cutest, friendliest bunny ever. She is very social and trusting towards animals and people. Anybody. I mean, the first time we met her, she was a little shy but in a matter of hours, she was happily licking my toes and coming to me when I called her (mostly). She loves been petted and will use her nose to nudge your hands to her forehead, where she loves being stroked between the eyes. If everyone heads downstairs, she’ll follow. Sometimes just because she’s curious and sometimes because she likes the company. When she lays out, flopped over or legs splayed, she doesn’t even bat and eyelash when I kick her feet around, messing with her toes. She’s just completely unfazed by my pestering her, calm as can be. We think in the last 5 days since we’ve visited she’s grown. At the rate she eats though, it’s no surprise. And for anyone who thinks bunnies smell or are dirty, Fluffa is very clean and doesn’t smell at all. She’s constantly licking and grooming herself and Hellspawn (and vice versa) she uses a litterbox. As much as I’m glad to be home to Marco and Gina, I sure miss her. And I miss Hellspawn too. Even if he’s a grouch sometimes.

Hello bunnies!

We arrived at 9AM yesterday morning and met Fluffa and Hellspawn. They are extremely cute. Fluffa is 8 lbs and only 4 months old. She is very friendly and easy to play with. She’ll basically let you pet her and mess with her ears and do whatever and she’s just as relaxed as ever. Sometimes, she’ll lick you (on your feet) to show affection. Hellspawn is a mini lop and he’s estimated to be a 1 year old. We don’t know for sure though because he was adopted. He’s a little timid sometimes, lunging at you when he wants to be left alone. We went to the vet’s office in the afternoon to get them checked out. The vet dug out some gimongo pieces of earwax from Hellspawn. Overall, they’re in good health.

Eee! More bunnies!

My sister and b-i-l got another bunny! His name is Alfalfa and he is so cute. I’ve been showing my coworkers photos of these two bunnies.
Alf Lies Down

I am SO excited to visit now. I’m even more excited about the animals than the food if that’s conceivable!! There’s so much bunny loving to do.

Gout or Bust!

Next week, we’re heading to California.  It’s been nearly 2 years since I last visited and I had such a great time wine tasting and eating that I wanted to go back to Napa.

On the agenda:

Of the restaurants, I’ve only eaten at Ad Hoc and it was amazing.  Simple, family-style southern pork and hush puppies but the flavors, wow.  It really was a dining experience.  So it looks like all we’re going to be doing is eating.

Parsley
And playing with this here bunny.

Dirty Hairy

Once upon a time Dirty Hairy was not dirty, nor hairy. He was a pristine fighting conch. A tough guy with an image to uphold. Fighting algae.

Now he’s dirty and hairy.

And we can barely find him in the tank. He just blends in.

Meet Bessie

Bessie the new anemone
This is the newest member of our aquatic family.  It’s a bubble tip anemone.  The idea is for the clownfish to pair up with her.  In the wild clownfish and certain anemone’s live symbiotically.  They take care of each other.  The clownfish gets protection and a bath from the anemone and the anemone has a defender and a buddy who will bring food to it.  At the store, we saw two clownfish swimming around in these bubble tips and they looked like they were really enjoying it.  So far Bessie hasn’t received much attention from the clownfish, but maybe in time, he’ll figure it out.

Meow

Whitlow
This is our neighbor’s Himalayan, Whitlow. We babysit him every so often when they go out of town which means we drop in twice a day, morning and evening, to give him some love and food. As soon as he hears us outside the door, he starts meowing on the other side. Then when we open the door, his furry head pops right out. We start petting him and he’ll start purring and sometimes rolls over for a belly rub. He likes being picked up too and petted. Or maybe he’s just amusing us. It’s all just a means to an end, FOOD! I like the way this man thinks. Food, food, gimme the food! Even though he has dry kibble to nosh on all day, he much prefers the canned foods. While we’re preparing his meal, he’ll rub against our legs purring loudly. So cute and cuddly. This cat has completely changed my mind about cats. I never knew they could be so affectionate. A great ambassador for cats, almost makes me want to get one.

Financial Tidbits

The more convenient automatic banking has made my life, the harder it has been for me to transfer bank accounts. Why I have more than one is really beyond my own comprehension. It’s like I have a piddly $5 here and another $2 there. Why do I do this to myself?! So I’m trying to merge 3 into 1 and in the meantime, I need to make sure there are sufficient funds from one to the other as I reroute bills to automatically draw from the new account versus the old. Hopefully, after all is done, I won’t have to do this again. I’ve been contemplating this consolidation for years but while in school, I was living paycheck to paycheck. There was no cushion to have that margin of safety to transfer all the bills, bills, bills.

Oh check out this baby girl:
Looking Around
My sis & b-i-l got a bunny! I really want one too. Love the paws and big ears. Don’t worry, we’re still keeping these guys.

Update on the aquarium

In less than 8 hours after they were added to the tank, one of the shrimps keeled over. So we have 2 shrimps now and one missing conch. He was around somewhere last night but today, he’s gone into hiding. It’s been interesting for us to watch them explore their new surroundings. We even had dinner in front of the tank last night to watch as they poked around. They are doing very well getting along with the clown fish and the hermit crabs and they seem to like hanging out together too.
