We adopted a cat! He’s a 9-year old Himalayan who’s very affectionate. He’s doing pretty well adjusting to us and we’re adjusting to him. Ever since we babysat for our neighbor’s Himalayan, we’ve thought if we were to ever get a cat, we’d get a Himalayan. He’s a happy new addition to our growing family.

The cat’s outta the bag!
Hermit Crab Shopping Mall
We got a bunch of new shells for the hermits.
Here they are, laid out front and center so we can watch the hermits “shop” for new clothes.

And it took almost no time for the hermits to descend on this “mall” like it was a Black Friday sale. I mean, they fought over the shells.

Here you can see one guy (in the red shell) checking out a new shell.

In the end no one walked away with any of the new ones. I guess there’s nothing like a comfy old shoe.
Chara eats!
Finally, a week and a half after bringing him home, Chara has started eating. So far, I think he might have only had 3 pellets. Attila on the other hand is always hungry. Sometimes I just like to sit and watch them swim around. They really seem to enjoy having the plants to swim in and around and rest on the leaves.
Planted Tank
We got some plants for our bettas to hide and sleep in so the tanks aren’t too bare and they’ll also help filter the water a bit.

One is this lava rock which has java moss and anubias growing on it and the others are these plants that need substrate to anchor them down. They are currently floating about in the water because I don’t like putting substrate in betta tanks. It makes water changes a lot trickier and the gravel can be hard to clean. I’ll probably eventually “pot” them in shot glasses with some gravel.
Droopy Attila
Yesterday, Attila was laying at the bottom of the tank looking extra droopy. His fins weren’t fluttering like usual and he was laying at the bottom barely moving his gills. I immediately did a water change with water from a tank of java moss. He still didn’t look any better at all. It turns out the water from the tank of java moss had ammonia in it and I did a second water change for Attila with filtered water. Poor guy. This morning, he’s back to himself again. Eating and everything! That tank of java moss must be cycling with all that detritus from the dying plant.

Chara has been fine all this time. He hasn’t eaten since I got him last Sunday I suspect because he fancies himself to be a babydaddy. He’s been blowing a big bubble nest and even when I changed his water last night and destroyed it, this morning, he has an even bigger bubble nest. He’s too busy guarding it to eat.
Tropical Fish World
This used to be my favorite local aquarium shop. I knew people who drove hours to shop here because they had such a wide variety of fish stock and their tanks were healthy and clean. I say “used to” because they’ve closed. It was such a sad and stunning discovery for me last weekend after the disappointing run to Lancaster last weekend. TFW was my next stop and that’s when I discovered, it’s no more. They had by far the healthiest and probably most comprehensive fish stock. And no wonder. The owner was a marine biologist. I’m sad to say I was one of the disloyal customers who started ordering things online. Part of it was prices and part of it was convenience. I’m going to shop at our local aquarium stores from now on for stuff I need. It’s so important to keep these aquarium shops around here in business because how else do you get good livestock?? I’m so sad about losing Tropical Fish World.
Attila & Chara Update
I’ve been so eager to get home from work to come check out my little buddies and how they’re doing in their little homes. Small tanks or bowls can be so misleading. They look simple enough but they actually need more monitoring because the water quality can quickly deteriorate. The smaller the bowl, the bigger the likelihood that you end up operating a fish deathtrap. Bettas generally can do okay in a couple of gallons but even then, I’ve been totally paranoid about checking on them because betta are prone to fin diseases from dirty water. I’ve been monitoring these two bowls as much as I can. For right now, I’m mostly trying to get the temperature right. Betta prefer warmer water so I have heaters in them but during the day it gets hotter in the house so heaters might be too much. Last night, I left 2 small heaters on overnight and the next morning the water was 85 degrees. Chara seemed to enjoy the spa nonetheless but I wouldn’t let the water get much warmer than that so tonight, I’ll probably just plug one heater. I’ve been leaving his heaters unplugged during the day because it’s gets pretty warm in the house when the sun’s out. Unfortunately, his mini bowl heaters don’t have auto shut off. Attila’s heater on the other hand was meant for a larger tank but because it has auto shut off, it’s actually working out okay in the 2.5 gallon tank.
So far, Attila’s been the hungrier of the two. He ate the first day he came home. I’ll admit, I probably shouldn’t have fed him on day one but I wanted to try and he seemed happy taking in a few pellets. Chara on the other hand, has ignored the 3 pellets I tried giving him. I ended up fishing them out of the water. Maybe I should get a turkey baster so I don’t have to keep sticking my hands in the water.
Bettas!
We drove all the way to Lancaster, PA to check out That Fish Place and it’s not what it was 6 or 7 years ago I tell ya. This store used to be an aquarium hobbyist’s mecca. It’s now just your run of the mill pet store. I didn’t find a single thing I was looking for except for 25 lb. bags of chinchilla food.

We also bought 3 camel shrimp and about a half dozen hermit crabs. Their saltwater stock had a lot of aiptasia, which is supposed to be an undesirable saltwater creature. At any rate, it was a fun day trip to Lancaster despite the poor turnout at the store. Not to be discouraged, we headed to a local aquarium shop, Congressional Aquarium, and picked up these 2 bettas. They’re doing okay so far. I also got a clump of java moss which I’m keeping separately in the 10 gallon tank.
Aquariums
This past weekend, we went to salvage all the old dusty fish stuff I accumulated years ago when I dabbled in fish-keeping. I picked up a 2.5 gallon bowl and tank, and a 10 gallon tank. I also grabbed 2 air pumps, 3 heaters, a hang-on-back filter, and some old coconut shells my dad sawed into little betta hideouts. These things have been out of commission for at least 6 or 7 years so everything was dusty and groady and filled with bug carcasses and cobwebs.
I brought them back and stuck them in the shower and gave them a good scrubdown and even boiled some water to sanitize things.
All that’s missing is the fish.
Children
We had a meet and greet a work and to break the ice, we played a scavenger hunt game looking for people who have never flown on a plane, own a boat, know more than two languages, have a PhD etc.
One of them was “have more than 4 kids” and one lady said she has 6. 2 dogs, a cat… and the manager disqualified her because, “it has to come out of your body.” Really? So step-kids aren’t your kids and neither are your adopted kids eh? I beg to differ.
