Unplanned Vacation

10 February 2010

Rayman's Raving RabbidsI haven’t been to work since last Friday when we were let out early due to the impending snow storm. We now have yet another storm which is coming down pretty steadily. So after day four of being cooped up in the house, the Wii finally made it’s debut. Yesterday was a full day of Rayman’s Raving Rabbids ending with Raving Rabbids 2 into the wee hours of 1 AM!. Today, it’s on to Dr. Mario. My arms are sore from Raving Rabbids.

Shopping Hiatus

8 February 2010

No car = no shopping! (Well, no money can generate that same effect too.) Who knew it could be so simple? I miss shopping though. Very, very much. Thankfully, I make up for it on the weekends and so far, it’s mostly just groceries and basic necessities. Yes, I needed 500 lbs of oatmeal. Thanks Costco. That place can be so counter productive sometimes (I have no space to keep this crap!), yet I keep going back. Why is that? I would like to meet their marketing genius. What is it with largeness and excess that makes it so appealing?  So this weekend, being snowed in, there was no shopping.  Just a lot of browsing online and pretending like I’m gonna get something.  And today, no work!  Yay!  I guess I’ll be staying home and eat, eat, eating some more!  I can’t even remember what I did all day yesterday aside from watching TV and eating.

UPDATE:
Why do I always do this?  Every time I blog that I’m not going to do something, I do it right after.  I say I’m quitting coffee and right as I hit publish, I’m brewing a big pot.  And in the same breath I say I’m not shopping, I hit the Order button.  It was for the chinchillas though, so that doesn’t really count.  Gina has a leaky water bottle, and that won’t be good for being away on an extended weekend, even if the neighbors are checking up on them.  What if they forget?  So while I’m at it, if I’m gonna place an order, I might as well get some more bedding, a coupla’ toys and maybe a bunch of timothy hay for them to munch on.

Superbowl XVILIZBBQ

7 February 2010

For anybody who just crawled out from under a rock, this year’s Superbowl (XLIV) will be played in Miami, Florida. The teams competing are the Phoenix, AZ Colts and the New Orleans, LA Saints. That is all I know. I hope the commercials are good.

Oh and the breakage continues. This time it was the garlic press. Darned Made in PRC again! It was for a good cause though. Beef ribs. One rack, dry rubbed overnight, in the oven. One rack also dry rubbed overnight, in the slow cooker with vinegar, sugar, garlic, beer, chili peppers, and cocoa powder.

The dry rub, courtesy of texascooking.com (this will yield a ton of dry rub, save the rest in the freezer or make less):
1 Tablespoon of:

  • Black pepper
  • White pepper
  • Sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cumin
  • Garlic powder
  • Oregano
  • Salt

2 Tablespoons of chili powder

4 Tablespoons of paprika (sweet)

1 Teaspoon of dry mustard

2 Teaspoons of cayenne

Snowed In!

6 February 2010

Gina Munchin'Snowmageddon or Snowpocalypse, whatever you want to call it, landed. It didn’t exactly deliver two feet of snow (as least where I am), more like one foot, but it was all day from Friday at 10:30 AM to about 5:30 this evening. Trapped at home, tackling the “Maybe-get-to-do list” was the activity du jour. Started with laundry and then headed straight for the chinchillas. I can’t help it! I find myself thinking about them or missing them sometimes when I’m out of the house. Yikes, I’ve become one of those crazy animal people. The Chinchilla-lady!

So the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser pulled through for the wall. Black scuffs from bike tires and other unknowns came off. The Eraser wore out eventually and disintegrated.
Here’s the before:
Before
And the after:
After
Without the fancy camera magnifying the after, to me, in the normal room lighting, the wall looks much cleaner. More like this:
After - normal view

The Orange Glo however, couldn’t quite get the stains and dirt off the kitchen cabinets so I had to go over it with some ammonia first. Tomorrow – Wash the shower? Cabin fever eating? Whip up some dishes? Pester the chinchillas? Try to take over the world!?

Countdown to the Sunshine State

5 February 2010

What a way to start the countdown to Florida, with another weekend snowfall. Today, they let us out of work by noon in anticipation of the “blizzard” but it’s 6PM right now and there’s not nearly the amount of accumulation (2 feet!?) the weather stations were predicting. In fact, there’s barely any. I win! Anyway, in a few days, I’ll be on a beach in 70, possibly 80-degree weather, enjoying my respite from this cold ass winter! I’m looking forward to soaking up some vitamin D and practicing using my DSLR on the alligators. I can’t wait!

3 years

2 February 2010

Today marks 3 years of Leafing Through. Groundhog Day. My new job at the time blocked Yahoo’s 360, my first attempted blog, so as a gift from the sister, I got my little piece of the Internet. It started as a distraction and it mostly still is but now whenever I find something odd or learn something new, I think about its blogworthiness. For example, learning how to scrub a toilet would be blogworthy if I were willing to admit I’ve never learned how to do it before! But it’s not blogworthy. Because it isn’t! I do love how it sparkles though.

Let me tell you about Rasika

1 February 2010

Now on the one hand, I don’t want to write a raving review, set your bar way high, and then you wind up disappointed. That happened to me before at Morimoto’s and Volt. The food was great, my bar was just out of bounds. On the otherhand, this place? Thus far, in my limited experience of fancy dining in this DC metropolitan area, it is at the top. The food is Indian/Indian fusion/Indian wonderful! I am ready to take all my non-Indianfood-loving people to Rasika to change their minds! If you have a vegetarian in the group, this is also a great option to choose.

Palak Chaat
If you read any review of this place, you will invariably hear about Palak Chaat. Fried crispy baby spinach leaves with yogurt and sweet tamarind and dates chutney. It’s the texture, the flavors of salty sweet. It is as good as everyone says.

Chicken Green Masala & others
The six course tasting menu gives you smaller sized versions of four of their entrees. In the non vegetarian tasting menu, there was Bindi Amchoor (okra), Tamatar Rassa (seasonal vegetable dish), Lamb Gucchi Korma, and Chicken Mahkani. The chicken mahkani was flavorful but not too spicy. I loved the okra dish, and the lamb pieces were fork tender. What I like most in all their dishes is the nice balance of spices. They don’t overpower. In fact, when I first walked in, I didn’t smell the typical overpowering Indian curry, rather it was more of an aromatic fragrance.

Chicken Green MasalaI also ordered a Chicken Green Masala entree which they recommended for people who like spicy. At first taste, it’s not spicy. Let it roll around your mouth a while longer, chew, and you’ll be blowing your nose and drinking water.

One small pick is the food is very rich. The curries taste of coconut milk and ghee (clarified butter). I mean, I’ve never had ghee straight, but I could taste the buttery deliciousness in the Chicken Makhani. If you feel full, stop, or you will make yourself ill.

DessertAlso, I’m not a fan of Indian desserts but I did enjoy the carrot halwa and gulab jamun here. Really, if it weren’t for the tasting menu dessert, I would probably skip it. If I had room for dessert, I’d just order another appetizer.

Since Rasika is rather fancy schmancy, it’s worthwhile to mention the ambiance and service. The decor was pretty. The bathrooms were clean. The service was not your typical DC area hoity toity type. Dylan was knowledgeable, attentive and relaxed/approachable. The dining room is noisy though. Some folks may not like that. I had to lean in to be heard. But I enjoyed it. I like the hustle and bustle and drone of a noisy restaurant. It makes me feel like I’m out amongst people. It’s also good they don’t bother with tablecloths. Hello, waste of water and other resources.
Clam Caldine Clam Caldine appetizer. I wish they had a naan basket because I wanted to soak up the sauce. They didn’t. I drank the sauce.

As a first timer there, I would recommend one person ordering the six course tasting menu for everyone to share and however many entrees (or other appetizers) for the rest of the diners. The six courses vs. the four is a difference of additional appetizers, and you want to try as many as you can. That’s where they get creative with the Indian fusion and that’s where they shine. Go!
