Crabby Conundrum

So a good classmate of mine decided to throw a crabfeast at her house, inviting the 80+ people in our cohort along with their friends and family.  I had misgivings about the idea because hello crabs are expensive but didn’t have the heart to tell her it was a stupid idea.  Instead I said I’d go and have a burger.

I felt better about the idea though when only 35 people rsvp’d to come - a manageable crowd.  But yesterday she sent out a “last call” email reminding people and suddenly the guest list grew to about 50.  That’s a block party not a house party.

Today she called to ask if I could come earlier to help her set up and found out she’s spending over $350 on just crabs.  In addition she’s providing hotdogs, hamburgers, and shrimp.  Folks are bringing desserts and chips and drinks but I could tell this is way more expensive than she’d anticipated.  I sent an email to the most vocal people in our class, maybe they’ll send through the grapevine that people might want to pitch in some money for the host.  Still, this is kinda’ irritating.  I mean, I know she’s the one who wanted to do this, but with this many people,  her house is going to get torn up.  Plus, besides buying all that food, how does one cook for 50 people?!   I know she had very generous intentions but this was definitely not thought out enough.

On top of that, I don’t even like hanging around 50 people!!  Every cell in my body is telling me to bail out, call in sick, aah-oooh-gah, abandon ship, abort abort!  But I can’t.  I will probably be there early setting up and stay late cleaning up.  Luckily I’m getting a ride from a newly minted mom.  Maybe she’ll have to leave early.  heehee
