Oh Pizza!

I haven’t had pizza in a long ass time! Frozen Celeste pizzas don’t count. I’m talking about real, cheesy, loaded-with-toppings pizza. Tonight, I finally had some pizza for dinner from Ledo’s pizza (their pizza is square because they don’t cut corners!). My first time having Ledo’s pizza and I think it’s pretty darn good. Thin crispy crust, generous toppings, not too salty, and not dry.

Pizza
Tomato, onion, green pepper, sausage, anchovy, mushroom, extra cheese. My belly is in belly heaven.

Cousin Once Removed

This is Clare. She’s 2 years old and she’s my cousin’s kid. Even though I’ve met her before, I don’t know Clare. I don’t know if she’s silly, patient, stubborn, or shy. Here’s what I do know:
Hat Lady
This lady’s got style!

I Just Couldn’t Finish It

I watched through maybe 1/4 of The Pianist and just could not finish the movie. It was so sad and horrifying, I couldn’t stomach it. Tried fast fowarding through some scenes but that didn’t help either. I can only think of a handful of movies I haven’t been able to finish. Actually right now, I can only think of 2001: A Space Odyssey (though I might have fast forwarded this one to the end, I can’t remember), and Dumb & Dumber.

The Pianist is based on a true story about a famous Polish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman, and the ordeals he and other Warsaw Jews went through during World War II. Although it was well written and well made, this is one hard movie to watch.

Earth Day Everyday!

Happy Earth Day!

Check out your ecological footprint. My footprint is pretty huge :( 18 acres, I could do so much better! I think a lot of it has to do with where I live and the lack of readily available public transportation. If only we invested as much money in public transit as we did in the highway systems. At any rate, just doing what I can to keep Earth habitable for a little while longer. At least until we find someplace else to go.

I read The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh in elementary school. That was the first time I ever thought about the possibility of not being able to stay on this planet, and having to move to a whole new world. It was the scariest book I’d read as a kid. Obviously it left a memorable impression.

Garden State

Well, it’s that time again. The weather’s done acting fickle about being freezing cold or warm which means, it’s time to break out the seeds! I still have coriander seeds from two years ago. I think they’re still okay. And I have chives seeds too. The portulacas have sprouted on their own from the seeds that fell last year and they’re about 3 to 5 mm tall. Barely visible really. The strawberry plants (a.k.a. bambi salad) are still green and healthy. It won’t be long til the deer find them again so I’ll be very surprised if I see any blossoms let alone berries. Not sure what else I want to grow but I’m sure I’ll figure it out along the way.

Bridge

On another note, I picked up my guitar again for the first time in months. It was so out of tune I could barely make out a G-chord. The thing about the guitar is, it’s like riding a bike. Of the stuff you learn, you don’t forget much even after leaving off for a while. In other words, four months ago, I couldn’t play anything and now, I still can’t! :) But seriously, it’s still bundles of fun. Ok, after four months you do lose your hard-earned callouses.

Piggy

You drew the pig:
Toward the top of the paper, you are positive and optimistic.
Toward the middle, you are a realist.
Toward the bottom, you are pessimistic, and have a tendency to behave negatively.

Facing left, you believe in tradition, are friendly, and remember dates (birthdays, etc.)
Facing right, you are innovative and active, but don’t have a strong sense of family, nor do you remember dates
Facing front, you are direct, enjoy playing devil’s advocate and neither fear nor avoid discussions.

With many details, you are analytical, cautious, and distrustful.
With few details, you are emotional and naive, they care little for details and are a risk-taker.

With less than 4 legs, they are insecure or are living through a period of major change.
With 4 legs showing, they are secure, stubborn, and stick to their ideals.

The size of the ears indicates how good a listener you are.
The bigger the better. You drew medium sized ears, you are a good listener

The length of the tail indicates the quality of your sex life.
And again more is better! You drew large tail, WOW!

Bruxism

Like so many other people in this world, I grind my teeth when I sleep. Before I’m about to go to bed, I can feel my jaws start to clench. It’s like a Pavlovian reaction to my nightly ritual. By the time my head hits the pillow, my teeth and jaws are sore and I have to consciously open my jaw a bit before falling asleep. I finally had enough of waking up with a sore jaw and suffering from sensitive teeth, I got myself a nightguard. A real, fitted, expensive, not-covered-by-insurance one from the dentist. Haven’t used it yet but I’m hoping it will save my teeth. I’ve always been a bit of a teeth-grinder but lately, it’s been awful. My dentist is really nice. I think he noticed the teeth grinding and asked me what’s been going on in my life that’s stressing me out. What can I say? The lack of a nightguard stresses me out. I got one, so now I can relax. Came with a cool glow-in-the-dark case too!

Fever Pitch

Stars Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore. What a fun sweet movie. I know, I know, Drew Barrymore often plays these types of roles but I guess I just don’t tire of them. I love stories like these because they’re romantic, lighthearted, and there’s always a happy ending.

The gist of it is, a schoolteacher (Fallon) and a workaholic (Barrymore) meet and fall in love. The problem is, Fallon is obsessed with baseball. Baseball comes between them, but then they figure it out in the end.

It’s easy to relate to the concept that this movie talks about – to what degree do you want to change someone and to what degree are you willing to change yourself and accept them? I think in every relationship, everyone runs into these questions.

Deviled Eggs

Left work early on Friday, my short-day and went grocery shopping. Yeah – that’s my idea of a good time on a beautiful Friday afternoon. I’m sick.

I was going to make some more of those mashed potatoes because I liked the other batch so much. Since the celery root at the grocery store looked so sad, I decided to try it with turnips and parsnips instead. Never had turnips or parsnips before. Parsnips look like white carrots. Parsnips are not white carrots. After boiling everything together, the pungent smell of the turnips and parsnips was overwhelming. Ended up picking out about half of those pieces and made the mashed roots just like last time. A couple of other things I did differently with good results was: added cayenne pepper (finally found some at Target!), and omitted the scallions. The cayenne gives it a bit of a kick. A good kick, if you like spicy.

I also made deviled eggs from a recipe I found off of Simply Recipes. I sort of incorporated other peoples ideas after reading everybody’s comments. I used sour cream instead of mayo (because I already had sour cream and not mayo), left out pepper, tobasco, and minced onion/shallot. Added cayenne pepper (because new found spices must be generously used in every recipe to fully appreciate the beauty of it), and dill relish.

Deviled Eggs

Yum, never had these before either, but quite good. It’s hard to stop eating them… I may make myself sick with too many eggs. I’m such a glutton.

An Inconvenient Truth

Everybody should watch this documentary.  Al Gore explains it plainly and clearly.  Although global warming seems like such a daunting problem that could realistically become a bleak future, he offers hope and optimism and that’s why this film works.

I know some people who point at others saying, “Oh they say they care about the environment but look, they aren’t doing this or that.”  It discredits everything else they’re doing.  We all try to do what we can and that’s what’s important.  I don’t nag coworkers or anything, but I was able to convince one guy to recycle all his soda cans.  Instead of tossing them in his office, he walks over to the kitchenette a few meters away and tosses them in the recycle box.  That makes me happy.  Also, I’m glad that no one at work ever gives me a hard time about not printing things out or printing front and back.  Now if only we could switch to recycled paper.  For my part, I signed up for green power from the electric company earlier this year.  It’s really not much more expensive than regular power.  Easily affordable.  Plus, it makes the frugal in me more mindful of when I unplug or turn off electronics.  I still have a ways to go but I’m glad I watched this movie.  At first I was reluctant to see it, thinking I would just end up more depressed about the outlook.  Instead, it gives me hope and makes me feel like I can help make a difference.
